Lord’s Prayer: Up there, Down here

Up there.

You are in a separate place from us, a very special place.

Down here.

This is the place we are familiar with. Too familiar. Aware of its “stuff”, and limitations.

Lord, you are way up there, and we are way down here. (We are kind of separated!)

Up there, your name is special. So special, we can’t adequately describe it.

Up there, you have a will, and we ask for your will to be done down here as it is up there (but if honest, we confess we aren’t totally sure all that your will encompasses, or what we are asking for! But if it’s your will, it has to be good. We trust you.)

We ask for your kingdom to come down here (presumably flowing from what happens up there).

Yes, we ask for your kingdom to come because down here we’ve got a whole bunch of “situations” and we need your intervention from up there:

            We need food! (that requires some kind of organizing, planning, buying)

            We need forgiveness (down here it’s an issue; up there it won’t be!)

            We need protection from evil (down here it’s a constant struggle; up there it’s not).

Remember us down here, Lord, from up there where you are.
